Madame's Plight

Imelda Marcos is “on the brink of poverty”.

At least that what she says as she tries to claim over $300 million worth of jewellery confiscated when the Marcoses fled the country. Last month she issued a letter demanding its return. The family appears to be boldly stepping forward to claim what they now say is theirs. Twenty two years after the fall of Marcos their ill-gotten wealth is still in dispute and the legal cases continue.

There are over 700 pieces in the collection now being held by the government. Tiaras, necklaces, watches, earring and bracelets – rubies emeralds, jade, gold, diamonds and pearls – Gucci, Van Cleef and Arpels, Bulgari, Philippe Patek. One piece contains a 37 carat diamond and there is a Burmese ruby the size of an egg. Imelda claims that many of the items in the collection “were intended for religious statues like the Virgin Mary, especially the tiaras”. Right.

Imelda is 80 years old now and although her, ahem, youthful beauty has passed, she still is quite a sight around town. She has several residences in Manila including a penthouse in Makati where a friend of mine lives. My friend sometimes meets her in the elevator where, often dissheveled and sweaty from the gym, she (my friend, that is) comes face to face with Madame, who is perfectly turned out as always. The lacquered hair, makeup, jewels galore and beautiful clothes (of a fashion) impeccably matched to bag and shoes. Accessorized by body guards.

Several months ago one of about 178 different fraud, graft and plunder cases still outstanding against her was dismissed and apparently she set up celebrations in the lobby, serving champagne to all the neighbours.

You have to sympathize with a gal who must be down to her last billion.
